Stem Cells from Karolinska

Stem cells are sometimes highlighted as one of the more promising areas in future medicine. The potential is significant, but the research is still young, and results must be interpreted with caution.

Here is a current perspective on the Swedish MSC stem cells from Karolinska / Cellcolabs.

Clinical Study (UAE, 2024)

Cellcolabs recently conducted a small (emphasis on small) Phase I/IIa study involving 12 patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis.

Results after 6 months:

  • Safety: No serious adverse events; only short-term pain and swelling
  • Pain: Reduced by an average of ~79%
  • Function: Clear improvements in KOOS and OKS scores
  • Structure: MRI showed cartilage improvement in 5 of 12 patients

Conclusion: Promising, but very preliminary. Larger and longer-term studies are needed.
