A recently published study shows that LDL cholesterol (the so-called “bad” cholesterol) below 70 mg/dL is associated with a 26% lower risk of all-cause dementia and a 28% lower risk of Alzheimer 's-related dementia. Statin treatment reduced the risk even further.
Previous research has suggested that lower LDL levels may be protective against dementia, but this study is unique in that it identifies a clear target level—something that could be highly useful in everyday clinical practice.
The researchers behind the study write:
“These findings underscore the importance of targeted LDL control as part of strategies to prevent dementia, and may be integrated into future guidelines.”
They also note that the results support the use of statins within certain LDL ranges for both cardiovascular and brain health.
This clearly shows that what is good for the heart is also good for the brain. Executive Health therefore strongly recommends that everyone keep their LDL levels low, not only to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, but also to protect brain health and lower the risk of dementia. As part of this, we are now offering all our clients the opportunity to come in for a free LDL test. Take the chance to take control of your health—for both heart and brain.
The study is published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.
