In a prospective study of over 33,000 participants (with up to 17 years of follow-up), researchers identified a U-shaped relationship between daily eating window and mortality. Both eating windows under 8 hours and ≥ 15 hours were linked to a significantly higher risk of death.
The study suggests that neither too strict nor too spread out — but a moderate eating window — may be optimal for longevity.
What did the research show?
• The optimal eating window was around 11–12 hours per day – this is where mortality was lowest.
• Shorter than ~8 hours or longer than ~15 hours was linked to a higher risk of premature death, especially from cardiovascular disease.
• The study is observational – so we are talking about associations, not proven cause and effect.
At Executive Health, we generally like intermittent fasting, but this study is a good reminder not to go too extreme.
