Supplements: Myth vs Reality

At Executive Health, we normally don’t advise about nutritional supplements.
Partly because we are far from convinced about the effect of many products, partly because it’s a jungle out there – and we don’t have the expertise to guide you in detail. When someone from the supplement industry speaks for themselves, we therefore, by nature, become extra sceptical.

That said, we listened to a podcast with Jordan Glenn (PhD and Head of Science at SuppCo) and thought the following was worth sharing.

The point is simple: supplements can be helpful - but only if they’re used to solve real problems, combined with lifestyle changes, and come from brands that actually contain what it says on the label.

Jordan Glenn’s three principles for using supplements for long-term well-being

1. Start with a problem - not a podcast.
Before you add yet another supplement, ask yourself:
What problem am I trying to solve?
Cholesterol? Sleep? Inflammation? Memory?
If you can’t answer that, don’t start. Begin with a specific goal and work backwards instead of “taking a bit of everything.”

2. Build a foundation before you optimise.
Basic, evidence-based supplements such as a good-quality multivitamin, magnesium, D3/K2, omega-3 and creatine support the heart, brain, muscles and energy systems - and can (at the margins) contribute to healthy ageing.

3. Quality, dosage and timing are just as important as the ingredient itself.
Many products don’t contain what they claim, and some don’t pass independent testing.
Use tools like SuppCo’s Trust Score to evaluate quality.

We remain sceptical - but also curious when the information is data-driven and reasonable.
