A new study shows that over 99% of all cases of heart attack, stroke or heart failure are linked to four adjustable risk factors: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, elevated fasting glucose and tobacco use.
What the study showed:
Several million people were followed over many years, and almost everyone who was affected had at least one of the four risk factors at a “non-optimal” level before the event occurred. High blood pressure was the most common problem (>90% of cases), and a condition that is often asymptomatic and overlooked.
The following definitions of cardiovascular health were used, where non-optimal levels were defined as:
- Blood pressure: ≥ 120/80 mmHg
- Fasting glucose: ≥ 100 mg/dL (≈ 5.6 mmol/L)
- Tobacco: current or previous tobacco use
- Total cholesterol: ≥ 200 mg/dL (≈ 5.2 mmol/L)
The longevity perspective
This insight underlines that “miracle methods” are rarely the answer. It is rather the small, consistent changes — controlling blood pressure, lipids and glucose + quitting smoking — built up over time that can radically cut risk.
Executive Health ensures that these metrics (blood pressure, lipids, glucose, markers of inflammation) are monitored regularly, and that we set targets with each client to move these risk factors into the optimal zone.
Preventing is not only cheaper than treating — it is what extends life.
